If source/ does not exist, tahoe backup source tahoe:backupdir will print "WARNING: permission denied on directory 'source'". "Permission denied" is a confusing way of saying that the directory does not exist.

Also, warnings could easily be missed since the last line still says just: backup done, elapsed time: ....
